Description This position is open until filled. Applications are being reviewed as they are received. This is an administrative position supporting the communication branch of the City of Westerville, specializing in public relations and marketing for the nationally recognized Parks & Recreation Department (parks.westerville.org).
This position operates within Community Affairs, a division of the City Manager's Office. It requires the exercise of initiative, independent judgment, and proficiency in strategic communication.
The PR Specialist is responsible for promoting programming to impact revenue, expand awareness and grow the Westerville brand. Importantly, this position is responsible for connecting the concepts of community amenities and economic development.
The position holder should have at least five years experience in a strategic communication discipline and must be a strong writer and storyteller. An understanding of public sector services and local government is desired. Knowledge of communication techniques and tactics, or an equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is required.
This position works in the office for 40 hours a week. SUPERVISION Reports to the Community Affairs Director.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF WORK Manages promotions for parks and recreation programming and facilities for residents, visitors and the Westerville workforce.
Works strategically to connect the workforce and economic development opportunities to community amenities and investments.
Collaborates with a centralized professional communications team on Citywide programs and services to incorporate parks and recreation and economic development messaging and storytelling.
Fosters a placemaking environment by encouraging collaboration between City departments and Westerville stakeholders.
Collaborates on grant-writing and sponsorship opportunities as necessary or directed.
Researches and recommends opportunities for target marketing opportunities.
Measures campaign effectiveness, including but not limited to social media analytics, paid and earned media impressions and engagements and revenue-based outcomes.
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS OF WORK Excellent writing, editing and storytelling skills, with expertise in AP-style.
Public speaking, presentation, facilitation and interpersonal communication skills, including active listening skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
Demonstrated experience in website management and electronic communications.
Understanding of public relations core concepts, with exposure to strategic communication planning.
Excellent customer/citizen service principles and experience.
Knowledge of and adherence to community relations principles and practices.
Bachelor's degree in Communications/Public Relations, Journalism or Marketing
Minimum three years progressively responsible experience in coordinating special events
Requires a valid Driver's License
HEALTH BENEFITS Employees pay 15% of the monthly medical insurance premium through United Healthcare which includes prescription coverage. Employee, Employee plus child(ren), Employee plus spouse and family coverage is available. However, a spouse who has affordable health care coverage through their employer must elect that coverage as primary. The City health care plan is a high deductible healthcare plan.
HEALTH SAVINGS ACCOUNT Annually, the City will deposit 85% of your health insurance deductible amount into an HSA account in your name.
VISION AND DENTAL The City pays 100% of the premium for dental and vision. Coverage levels will be explained in further detail at time of hire.
LIFE INSURANCE The City pays 100% of the premium on a $100,000 life insurance policy for employee and $10,000 for spouse and $5,000 for child.
RETIREMENT PENSION The City contributes 14% monthly toward retirement benefits offered through the Ohio Public Employee Retirement System. The employee pension payment share is 10% of gross salary.
VACATION New employees accrue two weeks of paid vacation every year. Vacation time increases with length of service time.
PERSONAL LEAVE Employees receive 6 prorated days of personal leave annually.
